Treatments for skin problems

Treatments for skin problems

Skin problems can be treated without damaging your skin. Just remember the golden rule for skin care: Don't pick! If you pick at acne, blackheads, or scabs, you may result in open wounds or dark spots on your skin. These open wounds can cause infections, more acne, or scarring. A deeper wound is more likely to leave a scar. You can treat problem areas using some scientifically backed methods.

Acne

Depending on the severity of your acne, you'll need different treatments. To treat acne effectively, you need to care for your skin on an overall basis. However, for mild acne, you can use nonprescription products available from your local drugstore, such as:

  • Salicylic acid

  • Adapalene

  • Benzoyl peroxide

  • Alpha-hydroxy acids

  • Tea tree oil

You should always apply sunscreen in the morning after using these products since they may cause your skin to become more sensitive.

You can also try acne patches or stickers if your acne is immediate, inflamed, or single. The patches are clear and thick, and they act as spot treatments to prevent infections and promote the healing of blemishes. These patches can pull fluid from your skin overnight, much like blister bandages. Since makeup cannot cover these, it is best to use them before sleeping.

Sebaceous filaments

A sebaceous filament is a whitish-yellow tube inside your pores that is made up of tiny, cylinder-like segments. Blackheads are oxidized acne, but these are very similar to blackheads. You may be tempted to remove sebaceous filaments by pinching your skin or using pore strips to appear smoother. If you don't follow the instructions properly, you may experience more side effects than benefits for your skin.

It can also cause:

  • Irritation

  • Dryness

  • Infection caused by open pores

  • Redness

  • Peeling

Retinoids and retinol are commonly found in topical preparations for keeping pores clean and clear. You may also benefit from massaging your face with mineral oil or castor oil for one minute.

Using an extraction tool is another way to remove sebaceous filaments. There is a circle at the end of this small metal instrument.

A dermatologist or esthetician can remove them safely for you, but you can also do this at home:

  1. Clean your face and instrument before you begin.

  2. Gently press the circle around the bump to test whether the filament comes out. Take care not to apply much pressure, or scarring may occur.

  3. After applying the toner and a moisturizing lotion, the area should be treated with a moisturizer.

  4. Prevent infection by sanitizing your instrument before and after use with rubbing alcohol.

Additionally, applying benzoyl peroxide before extraction may provide additional benefits.

Hyperpigmentation, blemishes, and scarring

The healing and fading of blemishes, scars and dark spots may require from a few weeks to six months. Makeup and sunscreen are effective remedies for scars and blemishes to prevent further sun damage and hyperpigmentation.

Other ingredients that help fade scars include:

Silicone:

The topical application of silicone has been shown to thicken, color, and improve the texture of scars. Silicone gel can be applied eight to 24 hours per day. Silicon dioxide may be listed as an ingredient in some products.

Honey:

Honey has been shown to heal wounds and scars in preliminary studies. If you're looking for a natural treatment, honey may be an option.

Vitamin C:

If you are shopping for creams or moisturizers, look for this ingredient. For vitamin C to work best, it needs to be combined with other lightening ingredients like soy and licorice.

Niacinamide:

Niacinamide has been shown to reduce acne scarring and dark spots. People with lighter skin tones can benefit from topical Niacinamide in the range of two to five percent.

Retinoic acid:

In one study, 91.4 percent of those using retinoic acid and glycolic acid had improved acne scarring. Apply these products at night only.

Final Words

Use these products after washing your face and look for products with these ingredients. It is advisable to always wear sunscreen after applying the sunscreen to prevent sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
