Cold weather pet care tips

It gets cold in the southern United States at times, but never well below freezing. We don't have much snow, but it does get cold sometimes. Cold weather is especially problematic for pets.

IRRITATION Free Walks

You should bring your pets inside when it begins to get cold. It can irritate a dog or cat's paws even if she's only gone for a short period, so do not use salt on walks or driveways.

Icy patches are better treated with kitty litter. As well as reducing slip hazards, it is nontoxic for dogs and cats.

Pet-Friendly Antifreeze

Antifreeze can be highly toxic if stored around your home, especially to cats. The taste of antifreeze is sweet to animals, which makes it attractive to them. It can be fatal even if only a minimal amount is consumed.

An alternative to antifreeze based on ethylene glycol is less toxic. Many retailers carry antifreeze marketed as "pet friendly." This product is based on propylene glycol.

On a cold night, outdoor cats often seek warmth inside the engine compartment of a vehicle. To let the cat escape, experts advise tapping your vehicle's hood before getting in and honking your horn before starting the engine.

Warm Up Your Pet

Though most animals come with fur coats, a sweater will provide warmth for older or frail animals. Short-haired dogs are particularly at risk as they have shorter hair than cats.

During the winter months, animals should not be left outdoors. Ours are kept inside, away from drafts, during inclement weather.

To keep warm, pets need more calories in cold weather. So, If the temperature drops, provide your pet with the food they need.

Pet sleeping quarters should be warm, draft-free, and elevated slightly above the ground.

REMEMBER:

During extreme weather conditions, pets should never be left outside, as this may harm their health. Let them stay indoors, near warmth places, as much as possible.
